Join me at Seaside Soiree

I’m so thrilled Elena from Charity Wings invited me to join her and her amazing group of volunteers for the Seaside Soiree again this year. It was such a lovely, three-day mixed-media art escape weekend. Sheila, Elena’s business partner, is an incredible cook and she fed us the best gourmet breakfasts, lunches and dinners plus a grand luau. In addition to teaching last year, I also got some down time to take workshops from my sweet friends Cheryl Waters and Liz Hicks. These ladies are wonderful artists and instructors.

While I really enjoy teaching at all the various retreats and events, I do have to say this one holds a special place in my heart. Elena and the ladies plan everything down to the very last detail to ensure everyone is pampered and made to feel special. I can hear the call of the Southern California coast now, while thinking about the good times of friendship and art. If you want to take a sneak peek into the event, watch this little video I put together this morning.

Teaching Q&A’s

The best part about teaching is seeing students get in the new techniques. Here is my fellow instructor Liz Hicks and the so talented Camille McClelland, ask Wonder Cam

My December column is live as of today on CreateMixedMedia.com. Since I’ve just returned from the most amazing time being one of 3 instructors at Seaside Soiree, I thought I would tackle the topic of teaching. It’s a subject I know many people are interested it, so I give some insight as to how I began my journey as a mixed-media educator, along with some helpful hints on terminology and getting started.

I hope you get a moment to check it out. There are four contributing editors and each of us writes a column that stays up for a week at a time.

Speaking of Seaside, here are some pics of me and my incredible students creating wondrous goodies with ICE Resin and SLK handcrafted bezels.

So Sweet Seaside Soiree

A fabulous group of ladies at Seaside Soiree this past weekend.

I had the sincere pleasure of spending this past weekend with an amazing group of creative women at the mixed-media art retreat called Seaside Soiree. The 3-day crafting event was hosted by my dear friend Elena Lai Etcheverry of Charity Wings, a non-profit crafting organization that raises money for charitable causes.

Elena and her incredible group of volunteers — Sarah, Glenna, Shiela, Ally (you know who you are!) put on a spectacular event where 26 people were immersed in a literal sea of creativity both outside their windows and inside their hearts. The event took place at the Oceanside Suites, a cool vintage-y resort right at Oceanside Harbor. The decor was pure old world, Southern California beach paradise. Gorgeous!

My fellow instructors are friends of mine, Liz Hicks and Cheryl Waters. Both of these crafty ladies complimented my projects and art style so well that our projects and our teaching styles went together like a peanut butter and chocolate combination. The best part of the event for me was being able to have the time to take both of their classes in such a relaxed and creative atmosphere. Usually, when I’m teaching, other classes are going on concurrently to mine so there is no way I would ever be able to sit in on a friend’s class.

There is a conundrum in the craft education circles as to if instructors should take classes from their peers or not. I believe this is because so many of us teach similar techniques. However, I believe we all have our own artistic styles so, as long as the artist always comes up with his or her own work (including titles and class descriptions) when making samples there should be no conflict from honing one’s skills from fellow instructors. This, however, is my personal viewpoint, and, as I said can be a controversial one within the industry.

I was so inspired by both Cheryl and Liz’s classes. I totally used their samples as inspiration to do my own thing, and my canvases ended up looking nothing like theirs and we were all super OK with that. In fact, the ICE Resin journal necklace and bracelets they, and all the other students, made in my classes were completely different and true to them. By sitting down for a few hours each day to make Art for ME! rather than for deadline was so freeing. It completely filled up my artistic well that was starting to hover on empty as I’m in the thick of my art projects for my book.

The Mermaid collage I made in Cheryl's class.

The other amazing thing about Seaside Soiree was the talent and generosity of the students. Many of the ladies’ work was at a professional level so I was impressed. They were so kind and generous in their compliments to me that, at times, I was literally overwhelmed by the love shared.

As many of you know, I enjoy a good meal. Elena knows that I adore sushi and don’t get it near as often as I would like because there is no sushi restaurant in my little town. She made sure that before and after the event, she took me to fantastic sushi restaurants to get my fill. It is, after all, Southern Cali. While there were no California rolls at the event, Shiela did the most amazing job cooking 3 daily gourmet meals for all of us attendees. I simply must get the recipe for her morning French toast casserole. I think she said it comes from Paula Dean, the queen of butter so maybe I better not.

Some of the super cute decorations made by Miss Vicky for the retreat.

It was such an incredible experience that I sincerely hope I get invited back next year. What a peaceful weekend of art joy leading into the busy holiday season. Just what I needed!

I {heart} Saturdays

Since I’m in San Diego at the Seaside Soiree having a blast with loads of talented ladies, this Saturday’s inspirational imagery is all about the siren’s call of the ocean. I love blues and greens reminiscent of seaweed and open waters.

LOVE this fashion shoot and how the model looks like a beautiful human jellyfish from this great website called eye candies blog.

I do a lot of wire wrapping in my work, but my aesthetic is much more toward the simple and sculptural. I’m not into what I call “fussy” wrapping where there are jags here and jigs there. Sea glass is so beautiful to use in jewelry, but it can be a pain to drill to make a hole. Check out the simple wire work of this piece and how it lets the beauty of the found object glass to shine through. This comes from the site JP with love Polymer Clay.

I also love this beautiful little ceramic shell stick pin from the same blog. The artist did an amazing job with the glaze.

Oh my, this outfit makes me swoon. So easy and breezy and classy. Makes me want to wear it to dinner where hubby and I sit on the terrace overlooking the ocean and drinking mojitos. Website is NKHenry handbags and accessories.

That’s it for this week’s I {heart} Saturdays. I hope some of these images inspired you to go into your studio and start working with some ocean-inspired colors or themes. When I return from the Seaside Soiree, I’ll be sharing more about the event and some pics on my blog.

Here’s wishing you a truly Artful day!

California Here I Come…Again

I’m off to teach the mixed-media art retreat called Seaside Soiree, which is put on by the wonderful do-gooders of Charity Wings. Don’t get me wrong, I love do-gooders. They make the world a better place because they care about the big picture of Life. They know there is A LOT of truth to the old saying that helping others really helps ourselves. Plus, these ladies have raised over $368,636.28 for lots of nobel causes.

So, that’s why when Elena asked me to volunteer my time to teach at the 3-day art retreat and for ICE Resin to provide a sponsorship, I immediately said YES. We first met Elena last year at CHA when she came fluttering into our ICE Resin booth in her fairy wings and tiara with other volunteers of hers in tow. The girls were doing a live streaming from CHA and showing all their viewers at home the preview of all the new releases in the craft and hobby industry.

Susan loved what they were doing for various charitable causes and loaded Elena up with books and resin and bezels, oh my. I was able to meet up with Elena again at Summer CHA, and for a few quick minutes last month when I taught in San Diego at CKU.

There are still a few spots left for the Seaside Soiree. So give them a call if you are in the San Diego area and want to come play at all things mixed media this coming weekend. I’m looking forward to spending time with my fabulous fellow instructors and also hanging out with people who love to spend their free time making art AND doing nice things for others. What more can a girl want?

I will be teaching two projects for the event, both of them quite fabulous, if I do say so myself. One is a ocean-themed bracelet using real sand and seashells and ICE Resin, of course. The other is a resin paper journal necklace that’s so awesome it sounds like the ocean if you put your ear to it. (not really).

I also have to tell you Jess Italia Lincoln at Vintaj really stepped up to the plate and was so generous to also help with the sponsorship. All the cute natural brass charms, journal blanks and chain was generously donated by Vintaj for the event. Seriously, these ladies ROCK. Not only do they make products that are just the bomb to work with, but their big hearts have made them darlings of the industry. We all love them!
